Xiao Heng went to Shangguan Yan's room.

There were five palace servants serving Shangguan Yan. One of them was Huan'er, the young palace maid who had been brought over from Zhaoyang Hall, while the other four were newly sent by Zhang Dequan earlier that morning.

None of these five servants knew that Shangguan Yan was pretending to be ill, but since Huan'er had served Shangguan Yan the longest, Xiao Heng, both out of sentiment and reason, decided to leave her in the room.

"Has my mother woken up?" Xiao Heng asked Huan'er.

Huan'er bowed respectfully and replied, "In response to Your Highness, the Third Princess has not yet awakened."

It seemed the act was holding up; at least there were no slip-ups at the critical moment.

Xiao Heng stood by the bed for a while before instructing Huan'er, "Alright, you stay here and continue to watch over her. If my mother wakes up, be sure to notify me. I'll be over at Young Master Xiao's room."

Huan'er responded dutifully, "Yes, Your Highness."

Shangguan Yan, who had been lying motionless under the mosquito net all night: "..."

You're leaving already? Just like that?

Son!

I want to go outside too!

Xiao Heng headed to Gu Jiao's room.

Empress Dowager Zhuang was busy storing candied fruits.

She hadn't had any for three days, and the fifteen pieces she had painstakingly saved were ruined in the heavy rain.

Gu Jiao had promised to replace them without missing a single piece.

As she packed the candied fruits into her new jar, she asked nonchalantly, "Those four outside, whose people are they?"

Xiao Heng replied, "They are palace maids and eunuchs sent by the Emperor. Strictly speaking, they are my mother's people."

Empress Dowager Zhuang asked, "Just sent over?"

Xiao Heng nodded, "Yes, they arrived this morning."

Empress Dowager Zhuang said flatly, "That little eunuch with the big ears, keep an eye on him."

Xiao Heng realized something and frowned. "Is there something wrong with him?"

"Yes." Empress Dowager Zhuang replied without hesitation.

Xiao Heng was slightly taken aback. "That eunuch seems like the most honest one among the four... Besides, all four were sent by Zhang Dequan. My mother said Zhang Dequan is a trustworthy person."

Empress Dowager Zhuang said, "Either your mother trusted the wrong person, or that Zhang Dequan trusted the wrong person."

Xiao Heng pondered for a moment. "But how did you figure it out, Grandaunt?"

Empress Dowager Zhuang replied, "Aijia finds that person annoying and unpleasant to look at. Anyone who gives Aijia this feeling is definitely problematic."

Xiao Heng: "Uh... Is that so?"

Empress Dowager Zhuang sighed deeply and said, "When you've been betrayed by a thousand palace servants, you'll recognize a thousand ways of betrayal. Every little scheme becomes impossible to hide."

Gu Jiao interjected, "Grandaunt, speak plainly."

Empress Dowager Zhuang: "Aijia wants a candied fruit."

Gu Jiao: "..."

There was no way she was going to get more candied fruits. Fifteen was the limit, and that was final.

After placing the last piece of candied fruit into the jar, Empress Dowager Zhuang smacked her lips, feeling tempted to sneak a couple more when Gu Jiao wasn’t looking.

Just as she raised her hand, Gu Jiao said, "There are still six pieces left on the plate."

Gu Jiao was spreading bedding on the bed and hadn’t even looked up, but she had noticed the shadows on the floor.

Empress Dowager Zhuang froze in place.

She pursed her lips, pushed the plate of candied fruits aside, and grumbled with a sour expression, "Is there no trust left between people anymore? Does Aijia look like someone who would sneak candied fruits? Humph! Forget it! Liulang, you eat them!"

"I... Alright." Under the piercing gaze of his Grandaunt, Xiao Heng obediently picked up the plate of candied fruits.

Needless to say, those six pieces would soon become Empress Dowager Zhuang's private stash.

Xiao Heng asked, "About that eunuch..."

Empress Dowager Zhuang chuckled coldly. "Those petty tricks are nothing but leftovers from Aijia’s younger days. Let him stay; Aijia wants to see who exactly sent him."

How dare they plant spies around her JiaoJiao and Liulang! They must be tired of living!

If Aijia can’t crush them, then Aijia doesn’t deserve the name Zhuang Jinse!

“Does Grandaunt have a plan in mind?” Xiao Heng asked.

Empress Dowager Zhuang glanced at Gu Jiao and Xiao Heng, her tone indifferent as she said, “The gift Aijia prepared for you two—just wait and receive it.”

……

The Imperial Palace.

Imperial Noble Consort Han was transcribing Buddhist scriptures in her chamber.

A heavy rain had fallen during the night, leaving many parts of the palace flooded. When Xu Gao came in from outside, he was soaked through, his shoes waterlogged.

But instead of changing his shoes first, he hurried to report the news brought back by the spies to Imperial Noble Consort Han.

“How are things over there?” Imperial Noble Consort Han asked while continuing to copy the scriptures.

Xu Gao cupped his hands and replied, “The Eldest Imperial Grandson has placed great trust in the people sent by Zhang Dequan and has accepted all of them.”

Imperial Noble Consort Han sneered, “Zhang Dequan was once indebted to Empress Xuanyuan for her kindness and has always remembered her favor. Both Shangguan Yan and Shangguan Qing understand this, which is why they trust the people sent by Zhang Dequan without suspicion. What they could never imagine is that I had long since planted someone by Zhang Dequan’s side.”

Xu Gao chuckled. “That person was bullied by a senior eunuch when he was eight, and Zhang Dequan happened to save him. After that, he pledged loyalty to Zhang Dequan, who has cared for and observed him for nine years.”

Imperial Noble Consort Han smiled smugly. “Too bad Zhang Dequan never noticed the flaw.”

Xu Gao added, “How could he have guessed that the bullying back then was orchestrated by Your Highness?”

Dipping her brush in ink, Imperial Noble Consort Han said arrogantly, “That young eunuch has proven himself. Over the years, we’ve cultivated many hidden spies, but quite a few have been exposed. He, however, is clever. Tell him that if he can help this imperial consort bring down Shangguan Yan and her son this time, this imperial consort will ask for an imperial decree to have him transferred to the Office of the Imperial Hall. The position of the head eunuch there is vacant. Although he’s young, it won’t be difficult for me to secure the role for him.”

Xu Gao exclaimed, “What a tremendous honor! Even this servant feels envious!”

Imperial Noble Consort Han said, "Then I’ll have you transferred to the Office of the Imperial Hall."

Xu Gao quickly laughed and replied, “Your Highness jests! This servant is envious of him gaining Your Highness’s favor, not the position itself. Serving Your Highness is the blessing of eight lifetimes; this servant only wishes to follow Your Highness forever!”

Imperial Noble Consort Han laughed. “You certainly know how to flatter.”

Xu Gao stepped forward with a smile to grind ink for her.

Imperial Noble Consort Han glanced at him and said, “Go change your clothes and come back to serve me. If you fall ill, I won’t tolerate anyone else serving me.”

Xu Gao was deeply moved. “Yes!”

Just as he was about to leave, a burst of giggling came from outside the chamber.

Imperial Noble Consort Han, who disliked noise, asked with a frown, “What’s going on?”

Xu Gao listened carefully and responded, “It seems to be the Little County Princess’s voice. I’ll go take a look.”

By now, the rain had lessened, and only a light drizzle remained in the sky.

The two little ones, barefoot and wearing tiny straw raincoats and hats, were splashing in the puddles.

“This is so fun! So fun!”

It was the Little County Princess’s first time splashing in puddles, and she was so excited that she couldn’t stop squealing.

Little Jing Kong, who often splashed in puddles back in the State of Zhao, was wearing the little yellow raincoat Gu Jiao had made for him. But no matter how many times he had done it, the joy never diminished.

After all, this time he was splashing in the puddles of the State of Yan!

And he had Little Xue splashing alongside him!

The two little ones were having the time of their lives.

Even the wet nurse couldn’t stop them.

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
