The Emperor waited outside for quite some time, feeling somewhat worried about what was happening with the Little County Princess.

“Little Xue.”

He called out.

The Little County Princess stood anxiously by the windowsill, her eyes fixed on Little Nine, who was carrying a small bamboo tube in its mouth. "I-I-I... I’m still doing my business! Don’t come in!"

The Emperor let out a helpless sigh and continued waiting in the corridor.

After hesitating for a moment, still feeling uneasy, he walked closer to the door and said, "Be careful not to fall in."

The Little County Princess replied, “I won’t!”

She wasn’t really doing her business anyway, so how could she possibly fall into the latrine?

The Emperor paced back and forth outside for a while longer. “Are you still not done?”

“Almost done!”

The Emperor finally lost his patience. He couldn’t shake the feeling that the little one was up to something strange inside.

"Zhen is coming in." The Emperor said.

He pushed against the door.

The little one had actually locked it from the inside!

Something was definitely up; there had to be a trick or some mischief at play!

“Zhang Dequan.” The Emperor called in a deep voice.

Zhang Dequan immediately understood. He pulled the hairpin from his head and, with just a few quick movements, pried the latch open.

The Emperor pushed the door open and stepped inside with a stern expression.

“I knew you were up to no good!”

The Emperor’s sharp gaze landed on the tiny figure leaning over the windowsill. The little one was gripping a large bird with both hands. Perhaps startled by the Emperor’s sudden entrance, her small body even trembled slightly.

When she turned her head around, the guilt of being caught red-handed was written all over her face, no matter how hard she tried to hide it.

But when the Emperor got a clear look and realized that the large bird in her hands was actually a falcon, he was utterly stunned!

“Guards!”

At his command, Zhang Dequan led the palace guards rushing inside. The guards sprinted toward the falcon that had seemingly attacked the Little County Princess.

Frightened, the Little County Princess let go of her grip.

Little Nine flapped its wings and flew away.

The Little County Princess pouted, and with a wail, burst into tears. “Waaaah—! I worked so hard to catch Little Nine—and you scared Little Nine away—I want Little Nine—I want Little Nine—”

She could even call out its name.

The Emperor walked over, scooped the little one into his arms, and carefully inspected her from head to toe. Once he was sure she wasn’t hurt, he asked, "What is Little Nine?"

“It’s that bird just now. Its name is Little Nine.”

"So you weren’t in here to do your business—you were here to catch a bird?"

The Little County Princess let out two exaggerated sobs, then lowered her head and fiddled with her fingers, looking both guilty and pitiful.

Seeing her like this, the Emperor was certain he had guessed right. The little one had come here specifically to catch the bird!

The Emperor was practically fuming with anger, “That’s a gyrfalcon; it can hurt people! Aren’t you afraid it might bite you?”

The Little County Princess muttered with her head down, “Little Nine doesn’t bite people.”

Look at this little mouth of hers, ever since she started school, she had been getting better and better at talking back.

“Whose bird is it?” The Emperor asked.

The Little County Princess pouted and replied, “It’s Jing Kong’s. Imperial uncle, why does he get to have a birdie, but I don’t? I feel so sad.”

You having a birdie would be the real problem. You’re a little girl!

The Emperor rubbed his forehead in frustration.

What kind of nonsense was this?

The Little County Princess had him so flustered that he felt like he was losing his mind. He took a deep breath, trying to suppress his anger, but he still felt like he was about to explode.

“Back to the imperial palace!”

If they didn’t return to the palace soon, the Emperor feared he might have to spank her little bottom!

The Little County Princess drooped her small head. “Oh.”

The Emperor took her by the hand and led her away.

When they reached the carriage, she suddenly spoke up, “Imperial uncle, I want to hide inside, and you have to come find me!”

Children really came up with the most random ideas.

“No!” The Emperor refused her mercilessly.

The Little County Princess clung to the Emperor’s leg, her soft, childish voice full of pleading, “Please, please, pleaaase! Imperial uncle, look for Little Xue, just this once~ Pretty please~”

Begging wouldn’t work!

“Zhen will only count to ten.” The Emperor said through gritted teeth.

“Imperial uncle, you’re the best! Little Xue loves you!” The Little County Princess squealed happily, scrambling up into the carriage. She closed the curtain behind her and carefully tucked the small bamboo tubes from her book bag back into the hidden compartment.

……

Qilin Hall.

Xiao Heng and Gu Jiao had gone to the purple bamboo grove to chop some bamboo, so when Little Nine brought the bamboo tubes over, only Shangguan Yan and Little Jing Kong were in the room.

The moment Shangguan Yan saw the imperial bamboo tubes, she immediately recognized them as belonging to the Emperor.

Since she couldn’t move on her own, she had Little Jing Kong go over and ask what was going on.

“These are teacher’s test questions.” The Little County Princess told him. “Is teacher here? Hurry and show them to him! My imperial uncle mustn’t find out.”

Gu Jiao wasn’t around and couldn’t look at it for now, but that didn’t stop Little Jing Kong, whose memory was exceptionally sharp. He quickly memorized the contents of the test questions.

Little Jing Kong was a meticulous child. Not only did he memorize each note word for word, but he also asked Yu He for six bamboo tubes to place the notes inside, replicating every detail perfectly.

—The only difference was that the Emperor’s bamboo tubes were the smallest size, while Yu He had given him the largest ones.

So, when Gu Jiao and Xiao Heng returned from chopping bamboo, they were greeted by the sight of six enormous bamboo tubes on the table.

It was… quite an exaggerated display.

“What’s going on?” Xiao Heng asked.

“Little Xue said they’re JiaoJiao’s test questions.” Little Jing Kong patted his small chest proudly, “I memorized them all. These are the copies I made!”

The two exchanged a look. Test questions? Could it be what they thought?

They took the bamboo tubes next door.

Xiao Heng shut the door and sat down with Gu Jiao at the table.

“Six bamboo tubes, six candidates… Let’s open them.” He said, looking at the oversized bamboo tubes.

"Mm." Gu Jiao casually picked up one of the bamboo tubes, poured out the note inside, and read aloud, "Enter the Songshan Mountain Range, launch a surprise attack on the enemy camp near Biyue Spring, seize the secret letter from the other party, and deliver it to the first beacon camp, personally handing it to the camp’s left deputy general."

“This sounds like the task for your final selection.” Xiao Heng paused, “But why are there six bamboo tubes?”

Gu Jiao opened the second tube. “You are a Turkic spy. This is the real secret letter of the Turkic army. Take the only secret letter and head to the first beacon camp. Deliver it personally to the camp’s right deputy general, who is a traitor.”

“What does this mean?” Gu Jiao asked.

Xiao Heng explained, “The secret letter seized during the enemy raid is a fake. If not for this second bamboo tube, no one would realize they’ve taken a fake letter. In that case, even if they reached the endpoint, the mission would be considered a failure.”

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
