Fifth Sister did not Imow if she could pass the exam because she had never attended high school. To close the gap in her knowledge, she employed the time-tested method of rote memorization.
Fifth Sister had devoured all the books up to the third year of high school in her quest to enter college.
It would have to be enough!
Fifth Sister had borrowed Big Sister and Second Sister’s books, memorizing as much as possible. She had had only enough time to skim through the Grade 12 textbooks once, so she did her best to consolidate everything she remembered–too much time had been wasted already.
Fifth Sister got up bright and early on the exam day, even before the sun could peek over the horizon. She shuffled to the kitchen and heated two of the buns leftover from dinner for breakfast.
She was met face-to-face with Su Wen in her splendid nightgown when she stepped out of the kitchen.
“Big Sister, what are you doing up so early?” Fifth Sister asked, surprised.
Su Wen folded her arms, quirking a brow at her younger sister. Since Zhou Hengyang returned to the city, she had not slept well.
Su Wen was unsure when it happened, but she had come to enjoy Zhou
Hengyang sleeping with her. At first, she had found it distracting, not used to sleeping with someone else in her small room, that person’s steady breathing sounding in her ears.
It was hard to ignore his presence, made worst by how aware she was because their surroundings were so quiet. The sound of Zhou Hengyang’s strong heartbeat, particularly, was a roll of thunder pounding steadily to the beat of a drum. It took a while, but she eventually got used to it, finding comfort in the steady beat.
While Zhou Hengyang had been around, she had slept exceptionally well. When he had left, she had jumped with joy, feeling liberated. Now, however, she found herself missing him dearly. It was embarrassing. The realization that she found it hard to sleep without his anchoring presence around was something she was still trying to come to terms with.
The way Zhou Hengyang had wormed his way into her daily life was too insidious!
It was scary how much people relied on habits for structure and comfort.
It had gotten to a point where Su Wen was so frustrated she wanted nothing more than to drag Zhou Hengyang back, even if it meant she had to go to the provincial capital to do so. How had she, someone who enjoyed lazing around in bed all morning, been reduced to such lows? She could not even close her eyes without seeing her handsome husband’s face, his passionate gaze as he stared at her hungrily. How was she supposed to sleep?
Zhou Hengyang was at the root of her current sleep deprivation. Not having a phone or computer to entertain herself, she wandered around the courtyard to burn her excess energy.
It was also how she bumped into Fifth Sister.
“Nothing much. I just got up for some fresh air,” Su Wen said casually.
When Fifth Sister heard this, she took a deep breath. “Big Sister, you’re right. The air is fresh and cool,” she replied. Su Wen’s lips twitched, speechless.
“Where are you going?”
“I’m going to school.”
“Why are you going to school? Isn’t it already summer vacation?” Most of the village children had returned now that it was summer break. Plenty of children dropped by to play with Sixth Sister, allowing Su Wen to observe her younger sister’s relations with her friends.
Developing connections was an important part of life, so Su Wen did not dissuade her younger sister from socializing.
However, she found it funny that no one wanted to play with Little Sister Su, and she had taken to mercilessly teasing her youngest sister about that sore topic. Little Sister Su had been furious with her since and ignored her for several days. It took her making Little Sister Su a new set of clothes as a bribe before her youngest sister relented.
“I’m going to school to check my exam results.”
“Oh!” Su Wen exclaimed in understanding. “I guess the middle school exam results should be out by now. Maybe you should go with Su Xue. Do you have any money?
Having gone to school too, Su Wen knew how distressing it could be without enough pocket money.
“Uh… I don’t have enough.” Her homeroom teacher had helped arrange for her to take the exam in the county, but she still needed some money. She had the pocket money her older sister had given her, not having spent a single yuan.. However, it would not be enough if she were to stay in town over the exam period; she needed money for accommodation and food!
