Also, many thanks to everyone who bought me coffee (*≧∀≦*)

Gu Xiaoshun had actually made several of them, but the only one that didn’t harm allies had been given to Gu Jiao.

The rest were all indiscriminate in their attacks.

The one earlier was his latest invention, and he hadn’t tested it yet.

“I really thought it would work this time.” Gu Xiaoshun muttered under his breath.

Lady Nan and Master Lu joined forces to take care of the five intruders in the courtyard.

Lady Nan glanced at the black-clad men sprawled across the ground and furrowed her brows in confusion. “Only five of them? I thought I heard six sets of breathing earlier…”

“Ah—!”

Gu Yan’s startled scream came from the backyard.

Everyone’s expressions changed instantly, and without hesitation, they sprinted toward the back courtyard!

When they arrived, they were met with an unexpected sight. Gu Yan was standing there gripping a long wooden stick with both hands, while on the ground lay a black-clad intruder he had just ruthlessly knocked down with a single strike.

Everyone: “…”

“You… you knocked him down?” Gu Xiaoshun asked in disbelief. This was almost too shocking to be true.

Gu Yan puffed out his small chest and proudly declared, “Yes, I did!”

Gu Xiaoshun couldn’t help but give him a thumbs-up. Brother, from this moment on, I see you in a whole new light.

“But.” Gu Xiaoshun frowned, “Since you knocked him down, why did you scream? I thought something had happened to you!"

Gu Yan held onto the long stick and replied matter-of-factly, “It’s more intimidating that way.”

Gu Xiaoshun: “…”

The truth was, Gu Yan had only managed to land an ambush because the intruder had triggered a trap in the backyard, inhaling the sedative powder scattered from the eaves.

As they were talking, a sharp whistling sound suddenly came from the front courtyard, followed by the crackle of fireworks exploding in the sky.

Master Lu hurled his axe without hesitation, striking the black-clad man who was still struggling and knocking him out completely!

Lady Nan looked up at the fireworks with a grim expression, “It’s a signal! They’re calling for reinforcements nearby! We can’t stay here! We need to leave immediately! Don’t bother packing anything!”

Material possessions could be replaced; escaping with their lives was what mattered most.

Gu Yan rushed into the house and grabbed the golden lantern Gu Jiao had brought back from the festival, leaving everything else behind.

Lady Nan returned to her room to dress properly and grabbed a few masks. While they wouldn’t pack, she still made sure to take along some silver banknotes.

Meanwhile, Master Lu slung her stash of hidden weapons and poison onto his back.

“We can’t forget this! It’s the antidote for Changqing!” Lady Nan grabbed the medicine bottle from the table and tucked it securely into her chest pocket.

Meanwhile, Gu Xiaoshun and Gu Yan went to wake up Old Master Meng.

Unfortunately, Old Master Meng was such a heavy sleeper that even thunder couldn’t rouse him.

“Ugh, I give up!” Gu Yan said in frustration. “Xiaoshun, just carry him!”

“I’ll do it!” Master Lu entered the room, handed the bundle of supplies on his back to Gu Xiaoshun, and said, “You two get the carriage ready.”

“Got it!” Gu Xiaoshun responded promptly.

He and Gu Yan hurried to the stables, led the horses out, hitched them to the carriage, and opened the back gate.

Master Lu carried the still-sleeping Old Master Meng onto the carriage.

Gu Yan and Gu Xiaoshun climbed aboard as well.

Lady Nan took the reins in the coachman’s seat. “I’ll drive! I know Shengdu’s layout better!”

After settling Old Master Meng inside the carriage, Master Lu joined her at the front, “I’ll keep watch with you.”

“Alright.” Lady Nan agreed without hesitation.

In the dead of night, a carriage sped out of Yangliu Alley, leaving nothing but dust on the deserted streets.

The outer city of Shengdu didn’t have a curfew, but at this hour, there were hardly any carriages on the roads, making theirs stand out conspicuously.

“Head toward a crowded area!” Master Lu advised.

“Where would that be at this hour?” Lady Nan instinctively asked.

“Tianxiang Pavilion!” Gu Yan said, lifting the curtain.

Tianxiang Pavilion, where Gu Chengfeng performed opera, was on a bustling street that stayed lively all night long.

It was the perfect destination.

Lady Nan steered the carriage into a sharp turn, heading straight for Tianxiang Pavilion.

“Hurry! They’re over there!”

Hearing the voices of the assassins, Lady Nan tightened her grip on the reins. “This is bad! They’ve caught up with us!”

This time, it wasn’t just five black-clad men—they had doubled in number, with a total of ten people.

The ten black-clad men, adept at leaping across rooftops and walls, tracked the loud clatter of horse hooves and the heavy rumble of the carriage wheels, closing in at a rapid pace.

They were drawing nearer and nearer.

“I see the carriage!”

“Go! Remember, capture the two younger ones alive! Everyone else—kill without mercy!”

“Yes!”

The black-clad men split into two groups, five on the left side of the road and five on the right, moving to encircle the carriage.

With a sharp hand signal from their leader, they launched into the air using their qinggong, and in the dim night, their swords gleamed as they slashed down, shattering the carriage’s compartment.

The startled horses, spurred by fear and with their reins severed by the sword qi, bolted into the night in panic.

At that moment, no one had the time to care about the runaway horses.

The group surrounded the collapsed remains of the carriage.

“Who slashed it?” The leader barked angrily. “I told you to keep the two young ones alive! What if you killed them?!”

The group collectively hung their heads in silence.

The leader pointed to a black-clad man beside him. “You, go check!”

“Yes!”

The chosen black-clad man mustered his courage and stepped forward, using his sword to lift a piece of the broken carriage wall. However, when he peered inside, he found it completely empty.

He turned back and reported, “Leader! They’ve escaped!”

The leader narrowed his eyes. “They can’t have gone far. Split up and search for them!”

“Have they left yet?”

Inside a small, shuttered shop, Lady Nan whispered the question softly.

Master Lu slowly poked his head out from behind the wall, peering cautiously outside. “It seems like they’ve gone.”

“Phew.” Lady Nan leaned against the wall and let out a sigh of relief. “This group of assassins has a completely different aura from the ones earlier. They’re death warriors, much harder to deal with.”

Gu Yan’s expression suddenly turned uneasy.

Noticing his odd behavior, Gu Xiaoshun asked, “Are you okay? Is your chest hurting again?”

“No.” Gu Yan shook his head. “I just feel… like there’s danger!”

As soon as he finished speaking, a streak of sword qi sliced through the air toward them.

Master Lu and Lady Nan each grabbed a child and dodged to the side.

The sword qi struck the ground, shattering an innocent water jar on the spot.

Old Master Meng, strapped to Master Lu’s back, was jolted awake by the sudden movement.

However, in the very next second, his head hit the wall, knocking him unconscious again.

Master Lu: Did I just hit something? But why didn’t it hurt me?

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
