Fifth Master Han clenched his fists tightly, a flicker of murderous intent flashing in his eyes.

In truth, he didn’t care whether Xiao Liulang advanced to the next round or not. After all, even if Xiao Liulang did advance, there was no way he could pass the final challenge.

But being made a fool of was truly an unpleasant experience.

This brat named Xiao Liulang... was quite an infuriating fellow.

Outside the tent, Han Lei subtly shook his head at Fifth Master Han, using his gaze to signal him to stay calm and not act rashly.

This wasn’t the place for a fight; being penalized and disqualified would be disastrous.

Fifth Master Han closed his eyes briefly, exhaled a deep breath to calm himself, and said to Gu Jiao in a composed tone, “It’s nothing more than a futile effort.”

Gu Jiao nodded in full agreement, “You’re absolutely right. It’s just a futile effort, so you might as well concede quickly. That way, Brother Fang and I can proceed to the next round of competition.”

Fang Ling shuddered in fright!

Inside the tent, aside from the eleven contestants participating in the selection, there were also examiners sent by the court and a few cavalry soldiers who had been eliminated but were allowed to stay and observe.

Everyone’s gaze simultaneously landed on Gu Jiao.

This young man, with his flawed face and seemingly tender age, actually dared to speak in such an arrogant tone in front of Fifth Master Han.

Was he not afraid of death?

Compared to the openly sharp and domineering Han shizi, this understated Fifth Master Han was the true killing god of the Han Family.

Old Master Han held him in exceptionally high regard. If not for the fact that he had been poisoned, even the position of family head would likely have been well within his grasp.

Fifth Master Han’s emotions were not so easily provoked. The earlier outburst had been an exception, one that would not happen again.

He cast a deep, penetrating look at Gu Jiao and said, “See you in the next round.”

Gu Jiao spread her hands casually, “Who knows if we’ll meet? After all, I’ve already advanced, while you... haven’t yet.”

What a deliberate jab at his sore spot!

Fifth Master Han once again clenched his fists tightly.

Outside the tent, Han Lei subtly signaled one of the examiners with a glance.

The examiner immediately cleared his throat and announced, “Ahem! Alright, let’s begin! Xiao Liulang, you’ve advanced to the next round. You may stay and observe, or you can choose to leave for now.”

Everyone looked at her enviously. Why couldn’t such luck fall upon them instead?

Gu Jiao shrugged helplessly and said, “Since you insist on having me stay, I suppose I’ll reluctantly watch.”

The examiner: “...”

The tent was spacious, with a sand table placed prominently in the center. The examiners were seated at the main position, directly facing the entrance of the tent.

Spectators stood in designated areas on either side, guarded by ten soldiers.

The atmosphere inside the tent was very quiet.

The first match was between Fang Ling, the young master of the Fang Family, and Fifth Master Han.

Everyone who had made it to this round was skilled in their own right. Fang Ling’s abilities were not weak; he frequently studied military strategy within his family. However, compared to Fifth Master Han, he was simply on a completely different level.

Fifth Master Han secured his victory effortlessly.

Feng Ling walked dejectedly over to the spectator area.

One of the young nobles nearby consoled him, saying, “Come on, losing to Fifth Master Han isn’t shameful. You can even brag about it later.”

Fang Ling sighed. “That’s true.” But deep down, he still felt he had let his family’s expectations down.

Next up was a match between Taoist Qingfeng and the young master of the Nangong Family, who happened to be Nangong Jing’s elder brother.

Just how confident was Nangong Jing in his elder brother’s abilities to believe that as long as Fifth Master Han was eliminated, the Nangong Family would surely advance?

Well, as it turned out, the sand table war strategy simulation crushed that hope.

“Thank you for letting me win.” Taoist Qingfeng cupped his hands as he said politely.

The Nangong Family’s young master, face ashen, was carried out by the soldiers in defeat.

Gu Changqing frowned slightly.

He had hoped most to see a match between Fifth Master Han and Taoist Qingfeng in this round. Both were incredibly strong, and he had wanted a chance to eliminate one of these major threats for his younger sister.

Unfortunately, the opponent he drew was the legitimate son of the Dong Family.

"Advancing to the third round: Han Zeyu!" The examiner announced the results.

Gu Changqing cupped his hands toward the Dong Family's legitimate son. "Thank you for letting me win."

The Dong Family’s legitimate son returned the gesture, graciously accepting his defeat.

In the fourth match, Mu Qingchen faced off against his cousin from the Mu Family, and Mu Qingchen emerged victorious.

The earlier matches were largely predictable, but the final match of this round turned out to be quite surprising.

One participant was a member of the Han Family, while the other was unexpectedly a commoner, a young man named Jun Xiuhan.

During the previous two rounds of selection, most people had focused their attention on the participants from the ten great noble families, which caused Jun Xiuhan, who kept a low profile, to go unnoticed.

Yet, he won again this time.

Gu Jiao, at least, had used the identity of Duke An's adopted son to compete, but Jun Xiuhan was a true commoner—a student who relied entirely on scholarships to study at Canaan Academy.

It was at this moment that everyone truly took notice of this remarkable young man from humble origins.

"This kid must have incredible luck." Whispered one of the noble young masters standing beside Gu Jiao.

Gu Jiao glanced at him. “Why do you say that?”

The noble young master replied, “It’s not easy for him to have made it this far, and now he’s even defeated someone from the Han Family. Just wait and see, noble families will definitely start trying to recruit him.”

Gu Jiao responded indifferently, “Oh.”

With the day’s selections concluded, the next round was announced to be a three-hundred-mile ride. It was said that the challenge had been personally designed by the Emperor, but the specific location and rules would only be revealed on the day of the competition.

After leaving the tent, Gu Jiao headed to the stables to check on the Black Wind King.

Gu Changqing followed behind her, “The final round of selection is three days from now. Make sure you let the Black Wind King recover properly during this time.”

“I will.” Gu Jiao replied.

Gu Changqing added, “The next round won’t take place in the military camp, so you must be extra vigilant. If the Han Family has any schemes, I’ll find a way to inform you.”

Gu Jiao nodded again. “You should be careful too. Qi Xuan and Han Ye have seen you before. Make sure you don’t run into them.”

Gu Changqing felt a warmth in his heart from his sister’s concern and, with a smile, nodded in agreement. “Alright.”

As they spoke, they arrived at the Black Wind King’s stable.

Gu Jiao had deliberately chosen the most secluded stable, one rarely frequented by others. However, when they arrived, they found two unconscious guards lying inside.

The guards were dressed in armor from the Han Family cavalry camp. One had a crooked nose and lopsided mouth, while the other was bruised and battered. Both were severely injured.

The Black Wind King stood proudly in place.

Gu Jiao inspected the Black Wind King’s feeding trough, “It’s poisoned. These two were trying to poison him.”

It seemed the Black Wind King was far more formidable than they had expected. The attempt at poisoning had failed, and instead, the Black Wind King had knocked them unconscious with a kick.

Gu Jiao patted the Black Wind King’s head with satisfaction. “You’re amazing, Big Boss! Truly incredible!”

Gu Changqing also looked at the Black Wind King with admiration, “Truly a remarkable horse.”

Description:

In the suspenseful supernatural novel “Records of Mortals,” Jiang Baiyan, once a solitary and impoverished youth, finds refuge in the Shi family of Chang’an due to his extraordinary bloodline. With his clear and captivating peach blossom eyes, this seemingly innocent young man conceals a fanatical and malevolent lunatic within. Destined to succumb to darkness amidst hardship and degradation, he becomes a harbinger of chaos.

When Shi Dai suddenly transmigrates, she takes on the role of the Shi family’s young lady, the one who subjects him to countless trials, eventually leading to her demise.

The twist? She never got to finish reading the novel.

From what she knew of the plot, Jiang Baiyan was just a silent, timid, and often bullied pitiable character.

***

Jiang Baiyan had never encountered someone like Shi Dai.

After he had slaughtered all the evil creatures in the garden, the blood-stained young man, exuding a murderous aura, approached her step by step, his lips curling into a malicious smile, "Scared?"

Shi Dai responded, “You’re really amazing! I applaud you until I spin like a spiral and fly around the moon three hundred times! And also——you have dimples when you smile!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

After seeing her at a lantern festival with another man, Jiang Baiyan lowered his eyes, his fingers twirling her hair. He said in a mocking and sinister tone, "The mansion in the western suburbs...if I hide you there, no one will find you, right?"

Shi Dai replied, "Does it come with meals and lodging? Can I sleep in everyday? Oh, and your cooking is the best!"

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

Jiang Baiyan was supposed to dislike her, even hate her, but as their separation drew near, his eyes turned red and he grabbed her sleeve, pleading, "Don't abandon me, alri—”

Shi Dai responded, "Alright, alright, I’ll only have you. Mwah."

Jiang Baiyan: ...?

He hasn't finished his lines yet though…
