Chapter 989 - I Am Single Now
"Well, are you going back to your bedroom or do you want to sleep here?" Evelyn asked.
Holding Gwyn in her arms, Terilynn said in a pettishly charming manner, "Eve, I want to sleep with Gwyn tonight." Terilynn couldn't bear to be apart from such an adorable baby.
Evelyn rolled her eyes at her sister and said, "Fine then, but first, go and take a shower."
"Yes ma'am!" Terilynn got off the bed and saluted Evelyn mockingly before scampering off to the bathroom.
As Evelyn pensively stared at her daughter's sleeping face, she remembered something. Not long after she gave birth to Gwyn, she found it difficult to share the same bed with her daughter. Oftentimes she would wake up in the middle of the night, feeling claustrophobic in her own bed.
This one time, Evelyn turned over and the little foot that was resting on her waist fell onto the bed.
Her eyes shot up immediately and she saw a baby girl sleeping behind her. Gripped with fear, she sat bolt upright in bed.
Staring at the little girl with wide-eyed confusion, Evelyn sat there motionlessly for a few seconds. Then after a while, she came to her senses and felt relieved. 'Oh, it is Gwyn, my daughter.'
As time passed, Evelyn eventually got used to sleeping with the little girl in the same bed.
Sometimes Debbie would take Gwyn to sleep in her bedroom, or Gwyn would sleep in the baby's room alone. Evelyn wasn't used to sleeping alone.
Getting used to something like that was indeed a truly horrible feeling.
Meanwhile, Sheffield had resigned from the Y City First General Hospital almost a year ago. Ever since he came back, all he did was work in the Theo Group to keep himself busy.
As a son of Peterson Tang, his charming good looks and brilliance made him the focus of the press. Most of the unwedded ladies of Y City wanted to marry and settle down with him.
Just the other day, all the media outlets published an article about Sheffield's intimate relationship with the daughter of the King of Gamblers. Reports said that he had deliberately lost a big sum of money just to make the beautiful woman smile.
More recently, there were rumors going around that Sheffield was almost impeached by the senior board members of the Theo Group.
Today, the newspapers published a shocking expose on Sheffield and his best friend Joshua, the youngest son of former mayor, Darius Fan. There were photos of them both entering a nightclub and neither was seen or heard from until much later that night.
Around 11 p.m., a man was seen coming out of a private room and he leaned his back against the wall. When a scantily clad woman passed him by, the man heard a voice from inside the room urging him earnestly.
"Sheffield, what are you waiting for?"
"Hurry!"
"Come on! Don't let that one slip through your fingers! You can do this!"
"Hey there, beautiful!" Sheffield commented as he walked up to the woman leisurely.
When she turned around to see who it was, Sheffield pulled her by the wrist and pressed her against the wall of the corridor.
As he peered into the woman's eyes, the intensity of his gaze was enough to put any woman under his spell. She stared back into his eyes, feeling drawn in, and completely forgot about her friends next to her. "Hi handsome, what's up?" she asked.
"You know what?" Sheffield smiled at her. "I've been attracted to you since the first time I saw you—"
"Ahem! Ahem!" Joshua suddenly coughed heavily from behind Sheffield.
Sheffield, however, paid no heed to Joshua and continued, "You stole my heart away with your beauty. I just can't get my eyes off you."
The woman blushed and shyly replied, "You are very handsome too."
"Ahem! Ahem! Ahem!" Sheffield sighed, seemingly annoyed and exasperated. Having lost his patience, he turned around to face Joshua almost immediately and said, "What the hell is wrong with..." His words were abruptly cut short at the sight of three men standing in the corridor.
Something about the way the three men carried themselves suggested that none of them were to be taken lightly.
Carlos shifted his cold gaze towards Sheffield, whose face was red from all the drinking. Standing next to him were his friends, Damon and Wesley.
Having noticed Carlos' murderous gaze, Damon asked playfully, "Are we here for the woman or the man who is flirting with her?"
Carlos didn't respond.
Sheffield almost instantly drew his hand back and stood up straight respectfully.
Carlos met both of his future sons-in-law in such a place. How could he not be furious?
Joshua put on a wry smile and greeted them, "Hello, Uncle Carlos, Uncle Damon, and Uncle." Joshua was quite familiar with Carlos and Damon, but since Wesley was currently living in A Country for most of his time, Joshua didn't know much about him. Wesley looked like he was about Carlos' age, so Joshua decided to call him "Uncle."
Wesley replied with a simple nod of the head.
Damon looked at Joshua and taunted him, "Hey, Joshua, are you having fun tonight?"
"Em...I was just about to leave!" Joshua stammered. He wouldn't dare to admit that he had been staying in the nightclub for quite a while in front of Carlos.
It was all Sheffield's fault. Joshua would have been with Terilynn tonight if Sheffield hadn't insisted on hanging out with him.
Of all the places in the world, this wasn't where he wanted to be seen by his future father-in-law.
Sheffield composed himself and took two steps forward as he greeted, "Hello, Uncle Carlos. What a coincidence! I didn't expect to see you here."
"This is not a coincidence. I came here to have a word with you," Carlos replied.
"What? Really?" Carlos' response puzzled everyone present.
Carlos cast a cold glance at him and said, "I found out from someone that you were here. I happened to be nearby, so I decided to see what you were doing."
Anyone who didn't know what was going on would think Carlos was Sheffield's father who didn't want his son to fool around in such a place.
Sheffield turned around but before he knew it, the woman he was flirting with had already left, possibly frightened by Carlos' presence. After heaving a deep sigh, Sheffield decided to come clean. "I work in the company all day. In the evening, I come out to relax and have some fun."
"Are you admitting to the rumors?" Carlos' menacing aura sent shivers down everyone's spine.
Sheffield nodded his head indifferently. "Yes! Besides, I am a single man. I have the right to have some fun. Am I right, Uncle Carlos?" People with families were allowed to have fun, why couldn't he, a single man, enjoy his life too?
"How dare you!"
The reason behind Carlos' anger felt confusing and unreasonable to Sheffield. Why would Sheffield shy away from the truth? Besides, he and Evelyn weren't even together now.
Much to everyone's surprise, Carlos raised his fist and darted towards Sheffield.
Sheffield, however, dodged the man's fist as quickly as he could.
Most of the people hanging around Sheffield were well aware of who Carlos Huo was, and as such, the moment they saw how angry he was, they immediately ran back to their private room.
Only Joshua, who was leaning against the door, thought about how to separate the two men who were fighting each other.
Carlos threw a second punch, but Sheffield was able to dodge it again. Fuming with rage, Carlos glared at Sheffield with bloodshot eyes and screamed, "How dare you try to dodge me!"
"I don't want to get hit by someone I can't hit back! You are not my father! But I promise not to dodge your punch if you agree to become my father-in-law!"
"Keep dreaming, you worthless imbecile!" Carlos hardly ever cursed, but today he was too furious to care about his manners.
"Don't mind if I do," Sheffield said. 'One way or the other, I'm going to make Evelyn my wife and you, my father-in-law!' he mused.
Wesley and Damon looked at Carlos, mouth agape. Wesley asked Damon, "I see that a lot's been going on in Y City in my absence. Care to fill me in?"
"My friend, I am just as clueless as you are!" In fact, even Damon didn't know what this young man had done to infuriate Carlos so much.
