Chapter 189: Earn Points

Headache? For someone like him, it would be strange if he didn’t have a headache.
Xiang Wan pursed her lips and asked with a smile. “I don’t know how. Where should I massage?”
“Just press anywhere you like…”
“But there’s nothing I like—”
Bai Muchuan stared at her with his half-opened eyes, as if he wanted to smile at her but due to his weariness, he seemed too tired to do so… yet that peculiar expression of his, when coupled with his idol-like looks, was especially harmonious that could stir one’s heart.
Oh my god! What kind of gaze is that? she thought. He did not even said a word but Xiang Wan seemed to get seduced when they looked at each other.
Her mouth started to feel dry.
She coughed gently and pulled a chair to sit at one end of the sofa and placed her hands on his temples.
As Xiang Wan’s hair was half dry, a lock of hair fell on a side of his throat which made him feel ticklish…
Bai Muchuan’s heart skipped a beat; he opened his eyes and his voice started to sound a little hoarse. “Little Xiang Wan…”
He seemed to want to say something.
Xiang Wan was mesmerized by his good looks, and now, she got seduced once again by his husky voice.
“Hm?” She thought he had something to say.
“Use more strength.” He puffed a sigh.
“…”
He’s actually making demands?
If she had not known he was really tired out from work, Xiang Wan would definitely knock his head.
Hmph! She used more strength as she pressed from his temples to his forehead.
Frankly, she did not know how to massage his head to make him comfortable. It was totally based on instincts.
“Feels good…” Bai Muchuan groaned and sighed.
That voice sounded light and low-pitched, as though a feather tickled her eardrum which made Xiang Wan stop the massage.
“Hm?” He was displeased.
Xiang Wan let him guide her how to massage while her gaze fell on his handsome face and asked in a low voice, “Why are you not sleepy?”
Bai Muchuan did not open his eyes as he muttered, “Don’t you know that when you’re too tired, you’ll have a hard time falling asleep?”
This is actually insomnia.
Xiang Wan had suffered that before, so she could understand that feeling.
“I think you’re under too much psychological stress.”
“It’s still manageable.” Bai Muchuan let go of her hands. “Give it a try.”
Xiang Wan took a glance at him and followed according to what he taught her earlier, slowly moving along his head while she thought of the case.
“Now that Zhou Dequan’s dead, this case… what should we do about it?” she asked suddenly.
“Hm,” responded Bai Muchuan but did not say anything more. Xiang Wan actually pricked her ears wanting to know more.
It was all quiet in the bedroom.
For quite a while, Bai Muchuan still did not open his mouth. It was only then did Xiang Wan notice something not quite right.
… She was just thinking about him suffering from insomnia earlier, but his breathing was regular and his body was relaxed—he had fallen asleep.
Didn’t he say he just wanted to lie down for a while in her room?
To think that this fellow fell asleep without a warning. What should she do now? Did she really have to let him sleep there?
She thought about when Fang Yuanyuan woke up in the morning and saw him inside her room, she would definitely kick up a fuss and vigorously question her about it. That thought made Xiang Wan troubled.
However, if she were to wake up Bai Muchuan when he was in such an exhausted state, she felt that she would suffer retribution one day.
Forget it, for the sake of letting such a capable detective who was serving the people to have a good night’s rest, she would sacrifice herself.
As Xiang Wan found a reason to convince herself, she continued to massage his head until she felt that he was in deep sleep. Only then did she quietly get up from her seat and stretch herself a bit before moving his legs and placed them onto the sofa in a more comfortable position. She also removed his slippers and took a blanket from a wardrobe to cover him with it.
After doing all of these, she heaved a sigh of relief.
As though she had done something really great…
Well, to some people, having a good night’s sleep was considered a luxury.
Xiang Wan looked at the sleeping Bai Muchuan for quite a while before making her way to her bed. She wrapped her hair with the towel, turned off the lights, and closed her eyes… but she couldn’t fall asleep.
The one who had insomnia fell asleep whereas she was wide awake.
It was all dark inside her room, but the moonlight outside the dark sky dyed the edges of the full length window white.
The color of the sky was blurry, and the tall shadows of the trees were as though torn as they got reflected on the window, forming an eerie image…
At one moment, it looked like a dark human shadow as though there was a nose, a pair of eyes, and even facial features.
But when she looked at it long enough, it was still the shadow of a tree.
Xiang Wan was just scaring herself, and at one time, her heart was clasped tightly in tension.
If Bai Muchuan was not sleeping inside her bedroom, she might have been scared to death.
… She sank her head into the pillow.
She did not know what time she slept and she had nightmares throughout.
In her nightmare, the black holes started to overlap each other as they got bigger and bigger. Inside each black hole, she saw sets of white skeletons one after another.
She screamed hysterically inside her head but nothing came out of her mouth. She felt that her body was as though bound and lost her freedom as she fell into the dark black hole of abyss…
“Ah!” She was making some humming sounds.
Xiang Wan was awakened because of her frightening nightmare.
She touched her forehead and it was filled with tiny beads of perspiration.
Maybe it was because she did not blow dry her hair and went straight to bed, she felt her head groggy and uncomfortable.
She knocked her head and turned to look out of the window…
The sky was clear and the weather seemed good. The sunlight shone in, and darkness was gone—Xiang Wan regained her clarity.
She had been frightened by the shadow of the tree. Why didn’t she just get up and pull the curtains?
She covered her face with her hands!
On the sofa, Bai Muchuan was still sleeping soundly and peacefully.
His sleeping posture seemed nice and well-behaved.
Yes, well-behaved. Maybe this word was not so suitable to describe someone with a strong personality like Bai Muchuan, but Xiang Wan really could not think of a better word to describe the Bai Muchuan at the moment.
He seemed to not have moved all night. He had remained in the same posture as what she had left him before she slept.
“Heheh!” Xiang Wan chuckled.
She got up of bed quietly, crept out, and closed the door behind her.
Fang Yuanyuan came out of her room, yawning away and both of them bumped into each other.
“Eh?” Fang Yuanyuan’s gaze looked meaningful. “Sis, why are you behaving so secretively?”
Not waiting for Xiang Wan to reply, she took a glance at Xiang Wan’s bedroom door and acted as though she had discovered a big secret. “There’s a man sleeping inside, right?” She smiled teasingly.
Xiang Wan looked at her, speechless. She tried to calm herself down. “What are you talking about? There’s no such thing.”
Fang Yuanyuan challenged, “Do you dare to let me go into your room?”
“…”
Fang Yuanyuan walked over, let out a chortle, and wanted to open the bedroom door.
“Don’t!” Xiang Wan jumped and blocked her from the door, pulling her away. “What are you doing?”
“I’ve guessed correctly, right?” Fang Yuanyuan winked at her. “Can’t you just admit it? Tell me, how’s the feeling?”
“What are you talking about?” Xiang Wan tried to talk softly and pushed Yuanyuan back to her room as she was irritated. “Don’t spout nonsense! He was talking about some matters in my room. In the end, he was so tired that he fell asleep on the sofa.”
“He’s sleeping on the sofa?” Fang Yuanyuan refused to believe her. “A man and a woman slept in the same room.” Yuanyuan started to talk louder and louder. “One sleeps on the bed, while the other sleeps on the sofa. Sis, are you sure both of you are really alright?”
“Shush!” Xiang Wan got worried. “He’s still sleeping. Talk softer and don’t create a din!”
“Hmph!” Fang Yuanyuan gave her a glare, but she listened to Xiang Wan and spoke softer, “Why are you treating him, the outsider, nicer than your cousin? I’m like your biological sister who is so close to you.”
“You’ve already said you’re my cousin. You carry a different surname and we have different parents. Since when are you my biological sister?”
“You! Fine, we’re no longer friends until breakfast is ready.”
Fang Yuanyuan rolled her eyes at Xiang Wan and went to do her own things.
Xiang Wan did not bother with her and went straight to the kitchen.
She decided to prepare a nice breakfast for Young Master Bai. Treat it a reward for him for working so hard to serve the people. She told herself.
…
In the kitchen, sounds of utensils and pots were as though a harmonious sonata.
After getting a good rest, Bai Muchuan was as though refreshed. He looked energetic and was especially vibrant. When he looked at Xiang Wan, his crystal clear, deep set eyes were as if smiling. There were no more red lines in his eyes.
This is so intriguing!
Xiang Wan marveled at his constitution.
No wonder he could be wilful and stay up all night without compromising on his looks. Just one night of sleep and he’s back to being perfect again.
“Come have your breakfast.” She retracted her gaze as if she had not been mesmerized by him.
“Little Xiang Wan—” Bai Muchuan did not want to let her off. He came over and embraced her from behind, his head resting on her shoulder. His warm chest leaning on her back. “I feel so blessed to have you.”
“…”
Urgh! His sweet nothings got activated again.
Xiang Wan glanced back at him, feeling amused but did not say a word. She placed the fried, crisp, and tender omelete onto the plate carefully. On the kitchen top, there were also toasts, milk, cold noodles with green onion oil, and hoecakes. There was also a tray of cut fruits decorated with emerald colored mint leaves which looked original, exquisite, and appetizing.
“You have inherited Aunty’s skills!” Bai Muchuan exclaimed and gave Xiang Wan a peck on her neck.
“Ah! Get out!” Xiang Wan cried due to the itch and almost used the spatula to hit Bai Muchuan.
Bai Muchuan raised both arms immediately. He laughed and brought the food on the kitchen top out to the dining table.
…
The aroma of the breakfast quickly lured Fang Yuanyuan, who had defriended Xiang Wan earlier, to the dining table where she sat down in delight.
“Wow, the breakfast today looks scrumptious!”
Bai Muchuan looked at the breakfast which was prepared with much effort. He felt his heart almost melted.
“This is a really great morning!”
Hur! Fang Yuanyuan turned to glance at him and then she took a piece of hoecake, laughing and shaking her head.
“You both are so happy together, but I’ve been fed with a mouthful of dog food. I feel so bitter now.”
Bai Muchuan let out a chuckle, turned back to the kitchen, and made Xiang Wan sit at the dining table. “You should eat. Thanks for the meal and leave the rest of the work to me…”
Pffft! Xiang Wan stared at him. “What else do you want to do? Breakfast is ready, all you need to do is eat!”
“You’re right, let’s eat!”
“I know it. You’re heartless.”
“Who says so?” Bai Muchuan had a solemn expression as he took her hands and inspected them. “It’s alright to make breakfast occasionally if you want to. But you’re not allowed to do that everyday as I’ll feel bad and my heart will ache for you.”
“It’s okay. Since I’m making it for myself anyway, not much effort to make for you both.” Xiang Wan was being stared at by Fang Yuanyuan and felt awkward.
After hearing what Xiang Wan said, Fang Yuanyuan immediately mocked her.
“Cut it out! Is this not much effort?” She continued to rebut, “Sis, when it’s only the two of us, I surely didn’t see such effort.”
Yuanyuan, don’t expose the truth when you’re one of the beneficiaries!
Xiang Wan glared at Fang Yuanyuan. “Eat your food, even such food can’t shut your mouth up?”
Fang Yuanyuan made a face and continued to eat her breakfast.
A good while later, she looked up suddenly. “Captain Bai—”
Bai Muchuan looked at Fang Yuanyuan. “Hm?”
Fang Yuanyuan bit her lower lip as though hesitating. “How’s Huang He?”
Yuanyuan did not know what had happened last night at the detention center.
Zhou Dequan was dead. Bai Muchuan was unable to give an answer as to what would happen to Huang He as well.
“I’ll let you know when I have news.”
“Hm… Thank you.”
Fang Yuanyuan seemed a little lonely. She did not ask anything more but ate her breakfast speedily, changed rapidly and put on her make-up swiftly. Finally, she took her bag and left the house in a flash.
Now, only Bai Muchuan and Xiang Wan were inside the house.
It was the third day that Cheng Zheng did not show up at their door with breakfast, nor to come in for breakfast.
Xiang Wan thought of the weird messages that Cheng Zheng sent her last night.
What was he trying to tell her? Why would she be in danger when she was at home? Moreover, Bai Muchuan was around as well—even if she could be in danger, Bai Muchuan would be able to protect her.
Unless, in Cheng Zheng’s heart, Bai Muchuan was the greatest danger of all.
Cough! When Xiang Wan thought of that, she felt her ears a little warm.
“Are you done?” Bai Muchuan narrowed his eyes as he looked at her.
Xiang Wan raised her head. “Yes, are we going to the detention center today?”
Bai Muchuan looked away from her, avoiding her gaze perfectly. “Not going.”
“What about the case?” Xiang Wan was puzzled.
Bai Muchuan did not reply to her question but finished the breakfast on the table, leaving nothing behind.
Next, he touched his stomach. “Let’s talk after we reached office.”
Xiang Wan got up to clear the table but Bai Muchuan stopped her.
“Don’t move! Let me do it.”
“…”
The domineering detective loves to do housework?
Xiang Wan felt like laughing when she saw his serious look when he said that.
As he had done a great job in cleaning up yesterday, Xiang Wan did not stand on ceremony and let him do what he wanted.
However, she noticed that Bai Muchuan was quite clumsy when washing and handling the cutlery and the kitchen looked messy. It was hard to believe that he was the one who had done such a good job in cleaning the kitchen last night.
Xiang Wan stood by the kitchen door, acting like the supervisor overseeing his work. After observing for a while, she couldn’t take it anymore.
“Are you the one who cleaned up the kitchen last night? Why did I feel that it’s not the case?”
Bai Muchuan did not turn back but continued his “washing battle” with the utensils and cutlery. “I feel this way too.”
Xiang Wan: “…”
After a short pause, she asked again, “Who’s the one who did that?”
Bai Muchuan laughed, a teasing smile appeared on his face. “The one who wanted to earn points.”
Earn points? Xiang Wan contemplated for a while. “Captain Cheng?”
“Why is it him?” Bai Muchuan swept a nonchalant gaze at her. “Did he look like someone who liked to do all these?”
“Well… it seems so to me.” Xiang Wan was just stating a fact. “He’s a disciplined person to begin with. It was understandable if he had offered to help you with that—I have a feeling that he couldn’t stand the way you deal with the pots and pans.”
“You’re wrong.” Bai Muchuan looked grim when he heard Xiang Wan complimenting Cheng Zheng. “He did not offer his help. I’m the one who got him to do it.”
“You got him to do it?” Xiang Wan raised an eyebrow and looked at him strangely.
“Yes. What else do you think it is? He had done so as he wanted to get me to apply for the purchase of the forensic material evidence testing instrument from abroad.”
“I see!” Xiang Wan felt better with this explanation.
She would be okay as long as Cheng Zheng did not do that for her.
The two of them looked at each other and did not mention Cheng Zheng again.
Nevertheless, when they left the house together for work, they bumped into Cheng Zheng at the carpark downstairs.
When the usually unsociable Cheng Zheng saw them, he actually walked over and looked at Bai Muchuan in the eye.
“You seem to be in good spirits? Must have slept well, huh?”
“…”
