Mrs. You got onto the car and headed toward the Xias’ place.
She stared at the skyscrapers blurring past her through the window, her gaze distant. She did not even hear her phone ringing in her purse. She snapped back to the present when her chauffeur reminded her.
“Mrs. You, your phone has been ringing for a long time now.” The chauffeur was an old employee of the Xias. Now that Xia Rushuang was not that young anymore, he could call her “Miss Xia” as he had done before, and he could definitely not call her ‘Elder Miss’, so he just dubbed her as ‘Mrs. You’.
Mrs. You was wrenched back to reality. “I’m really getting old,” she said, smiling. “I drift off so easily without one night’s sleep. Thank you.”
“You’ve worked hard,” the chauffeur remarked.
Xia Rushuang took her phone out. When she saw that it was You Xi, her expression finally softened slightly.
“Hello? My son.”
You Xi was bored to death in the house. His injuries has almost healed except for the areas where he had broken his bones. The house had no one inside today. He did not want to stay inside, so he sat in the garden to get some fresh air.
“Mom, how’s Grandma?” You Xi asked.
The smile on Mrs. You’s face widened. “The doctors performed surgery on her for about four hours today. The operation was successful, and they managed to save her but she isn’t out of the critical period yet. We’ll only know by tonight. If your grandmother knew that you thought of her so much, she would be so happy.”
“Well, Grandma does love me best. Oh, right. Mother, then you won’t be coming back anytime soon.”
“Mmhmm. I have to stay here and take care of your grandmother,” Mrs. You said, her tone apprehensive. “Your grandfather is too old—he needs someone to take care of him and your uncle is too busy. There’s basically no one in the house. I’ll take care of them here. Tell your father’s parents that I’m staying overnight so that they won’t blame me for anything.”
“Oh… Don’t worry. I’ll tell them,” You Xi said, his voice laden with boredom. “They won’t blame you anyway. Just stay there. By the way, Mom… Last time…the car that I saw… When are you buying it for me?”
“Let’s put this aside for now. You Xi… Can I ask you something?”
“Ask away.”
Mrs. You’s expression was solemn. “Tell me honestly—was there anything that happened between you and Qingsi?” she asked.
You Xi thought of his second uncle there and then. A chill crawled down his spine; he shivered. “Nope,” he replied. “Of course, not.”
“You Xi, don’t lie to your mother!”
“Mom, really. Nothing happened.”
“Do you still want that Pagani?”
You Xi clenched his teeth. “All right, all right… I’ll tell you. You too, know that I like pretty female celebrities. That Yan Qingsi is pretty, so naturally I paid her some attention. I admit… I did try to court her, but…she already has a boyfriend. They even have supporters, and I’m not the type that goes after a girl relentlessly so that’s what happened…”
Mrs. You pondered on this for a while. “When you get better, come over in a few days.”
“Why?”
“Just come when I tell you to,” Mrs. You barked. “Your grandmother is unconscious now. As her grandson, can’t you just come and see her?”
“Okay, okay… I get it. Then…I’ll hang up if there’s nothing else.”
You Xi hung up and pursed his lips. If he had known that this would happen, he would not have called her.
He wanted to get up when he suddenly realized a shadow hanging over his head. He raised his chin, and a devil greeted his sight. He fell from his chair immediately. “Un–un–uncle…” he stammered.
You Yi slowly took a seat, rolling his sleeves up at a leisurely pace. A small smile lifted the corners of his lips. “Sit down. No need to be so scared. Let’s just talk. Will you tell me everything yourself…or will you wait for me to ask?”
